01/06/2012 : June's Auction
On Thursday the 7th June a dress owned and worn by one of Hollywood's most famous stars - Vivien Leigh - goes under the hammer at Adam Partridge Auctioneers & Valuers in Liverpool.
The lime green dress was created by noted Beverley Hills designer Lucie Ann in the late 1950's and oozes grace and glamour. The vendor's mother befriended Vivien Leigh in the 1960's and they regularly wrote to each other for many years, and included with the dress is a signed photograph of Vivien Leigh and several cards. Most importantly, there is also a letter written on Vivien Leigh pale blue headed note paper from Vivien's only child - Suzanne Farrington. It is dated 1981 and reads......."Dear Ada, I'm sorry to have taken so long in writing to you - on the last three bits of mama's writing paper - it seems appropriate. I'm afraid my letter won't be nearly as lenghty as yours, I've no excuses like part time jobs, only my father is moving from his house into the village and the clearing up seems endless - 25 years of reckless attic storing. One of which was a trunk of my mothers clothes - the slightly valuable things are going to a museum but I found this dress and I just wondered if you'd like it. If you don't please just give it away - I remember her wearing it when we were in Hollywood together..............."
The dress is estimated between £1000-£1500 and is part of an 800 lot auction of antiques and collectables including a 1981 Mercedes 500 SL, a Sunbeam S7 motorbike and a huge array of items from silver & jewellery to furniture & paintings. Amongst these items are around 30 lots being sold as part of BBC 2's popular antiques television programme "Flog It!"
