13/12/2018 : December Auction Highlights

A selection of star lots from our December auction

The first week of December brought a sensational auction: featured toys and game lots and a spectacular international turn-out amongst memorable moments. Of note, two sales brought surprise results in the Furniture and Garden & Architectural categories.

One walnut William IV drum table with quadripartite platform base, estimated at £150-200 rocketed to an unexpected £2,000. Hammering at £250, a late 19th century stick stand followed in furniture.

Immediately succeeding, with excitement running high post furniture sales, a landscape-decorated jardinière by Hungarian manufacturer Zsolnay Pecs brought shocking results. Estimated at £20-40 due to some cracking around the bowl, rarity brought this colourful piece to a bidding war between the internet and a telephone bidder, eventually landing with a hammer price of £8,600.

Several great examples came out of the Watch category this auction, led by a vintage stainless steel Rolex, complete with certifications, at £1,850. Other top hammer prices included a Favre-Leuba automatic diver’s watch at £920 and a Rotary Aqua-Plunge diver’s watch at £460.

But the star of this auction was, of course, toys. Chugging along to the lead of this category was an O gauge Hornby 462 Locomotive titled ‘Princess Elizabeth,’ at £840, followed by some miniature collectables: a quantity of Subbuteo football teams and floodlights and a collection of Britains figures and models at £190.
