04/04/2014 : Another buoyant Maritime section..!

A packed saleroom welcomed the BBC team from “Flog-It!” and strong bids came thick and fast.

Our first specialist Maritime section of the year yielded some excellent results; an early 20th century divers helmet by Siebe Gorman & Co. attracting telephone bidders from far and wide, eventually realising £3000. A good mid-19th century 2-day marine chronometer made £2,700 and a large oil on canvas of “The Barque Falstaff” attributed to Lai Fong of Calcutta brought in £1050. One of the most visually striking items in the sale were two lots of original cruise-line posters for various Shipping Companies, all dating from the 1950’s and 60’s and which sold for a combined total £1060.

In the general section of the sale, more telephone bidders vied for the opportunity to purchase a good example of a 19th century floor standing Symphonion which sold for £3,300.

Oriental items once again proved strong with a Chinese blue and white bowl also reaching £3,300, a calligraphy book selling for £1000 and a good pair of early 20th century ivory figures making £840.

Silver and jewellery items continued to sell well, with a late Victorian glass and silver mounted claret jug by Wakely & Wheeler reaching £1050, and a Boodle & Dunthorne Platinum snap bangle with matching earrings falling under the hammer for £1,300.

Our next sale on the 7th May features a specialist section of Rock & Pop memorablia so make a date in the diary and ‘Rock-on’ to our Jordan Street Saleroom!
