Trans-continental lots excited the bidders at Adam Partridge's Liverpool saleroom which saw a collection of 20th century furniture draw huge interest from collectors all over the UK, with the top price being £880 securing a 1950's Danish teak drop arm sofa. Designed by Peter Hvidt for France & Sohn it was presented in immaculate condition. This, along with numerous other pieces of design furniture, were consigned by a discerning collector in Southport, who's collection of studio pottery from the same era will be offered in our Macclesfield saleroom in October. This period of furniture has seen a steep rise in popularity and value in recent years, as the slick designs become appealing to a younger audience of buyers. From the same home a 1970's Hille side cabinet with Vitrolite doors achieved £580, a pair of Robin Day designed chairs sold for £440, and a 1930's Venesta plywood stool realised £400. In the picture section there was a huge surprise for a local charity. The charity built and run a hospice in Africa and made the most of the free valuation service we offer. They were flabbergasted to learn that an oil painting by Chilean artist Alfredo Helsby could be worth £500-£700. Both we and they were delighted to see the hammer fall at £660, with the buyer being a private collector living in Chile! Also in the picture section, a large oil by Thomas Rose Miles also made £660, whilst an album of drawings and photographs relating to Australia realised £620. Elsewhere in the sale, a set of Royal Doulton figures modelled as Henry VIII and his six wives sold for £660, a pocket watch hallmarked for 1914 achieved £700 and a small collection of Japanese carved ivory okimonos were led by £400 for a female carrying a child. An equally attractive bedroom suite sold for £1350, whilst a three-piece suite realised a healthy £700, and a stunning Walker & Hall silver collared crystal decanter sold to a telephone bidder for £490. Proving that there is still good demand for early 19th century furniture, a low chest of drawers sold to the internet for £980 and an oak cellerette sold in the room for £320.
