Lot Number: 739
Robert Parsons; a 1641 Charles I edition of 'Leicester's Common-Wealth', first written in the reign of Elizabeth I, original title, 'The Copie of a Leter Wryten by a Master of Cambrige' 1584. A scholars' book circulated in Elizabethan England which attacked Elizabeth's favourite, Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester, the book in the form of a dialogue between a Cambridge lawyer and a gentleman pleading for religious tolerance. The work was read as Roman Catholic propaganda against the political and religious policy of Elizabeth I's reign, especially the Puritan sympathies held by Leicester, also contains references to Leicester's reputed monstrous sexual appetite and his new wife's lewd private life.
