Lot Number: 730
A rare WWII 'Para Dummy', otherwise known as a Rupert - a military deception device intended to imitate a Paratrooper drop, causing the enemy to move forces or firing power unnecessarily, approx height 76cm. They were filled with sand and intended to explode on contact with the ground in order to hide their presence and purpose. On D-Day approximately 500 dummies were dropped at four locations in Normandy along with six SAS soldiers who were dropped alongside the Para Dummies and played recordings of loud battle noises in order to divert the German troops from the real invasion. The Ruperts were a fraction of human size and made from hessian cloth - from the ground it was impossible to detect that they were not of human size due to the lack of objects for reference of scale.
Category: Militaria
Estimate: £700 - £1000
